Seven Days to Seven Castles  -  day 5

This is probably not what you were expecting to see ! The 5th castle is Nanny's house so no photographs today. Anyway, this is a very important day for some of us as Bishop Brennan comes to bless the brand shiny new Scoil Mhaodhóig Poulfur ! I am the fourth generation of teachers in almost unbroken service who have served in the schools in the parish since the late 1800's and just for today, Poulfur, Fethard-on-Sea, is the centre of the universe !

The Augustinian Abbey or Priory was built about 1317 under the patronage of the Kavanaghs. As can be seen, considerable works were carried out on the Abbey in the past year, with financial support from Wexford County Council and The Heritage Council. The question is what did we do to two of the Southern Windows ? Come along and see for yourself next Saturday, or indeed any of the five Saturday afternoons that we are receiving (paying) guests during the summer..

This is what we call The Black Castle or Fitzhenry's Castle. Most of these photographs were taken in 2006, since which time the castle further deteriorated. Fearing that the crack in the western wall would cause the building to split and fall, conservation work was carried out which has greatly eased our minds. Come and see the results for yourself on Saturday evening between 3 and 7 p.m. !
